Personality:
The Scarecrow, when we first meet him, appears helpful, as when Dorothy is lost on her way to the Emerald City, he immediately offers to guide her, even if he doesn’t know where she’s going. He is also exceedingly humble; although he claimed to not be very intelligent, as he does not have a human brain, he is rather bright, and thinks into things an awful lot. He has a lot of common sense, which is balanced out by inexperience and some naivety. He is a very loyal friend and when he believes strongly enough in something, he will work very, very hard to achieve that end, whether it is helping a friend or fighting for an ideal.

Background:
The Scarecrow first belonged to a poor farmer in Oz who placed him on a pole in a field of corn to protect it from crows. Even after the old farmer passed away, the Scarecrow was left to guard the field alone and fruitlessly, for the crows, upon realizing he wasn’t human, came from miles around to eat in his field and laugh at him. The Scarecrow could only look at the pole up his back and wish that he had a brain, so that he could think all day and be more than just a scarecrow. All of that changed, however, when a girl named Dorothy first came to Oz and passed the Scarecrow’s field on her way to the Emerald City. Dorothy convinced the Scarecrow that were he to want a brain, he could come with her to ask the Wizard of Oz for one, as she planned to wish to go back to her home in Kansas. The Scarecrow happily agreed, and the two made down the Yellow Brick Road together toward the Wizard. With Dorothy’s help, and the help of the Tinman and the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow made it to the Emerald City, killed the terrible Witch of the West and was able to receive a brain from the Wizard of Oz. Meaning to take Dorothy home, the Wizard of Oz left the Scarecrow in charge of the Emerald City and Oz in his stead, with the Tinman and the Lion as his advisors. Upon Dorothy’s departure, the Scarecrow ruled Oz justly and wisely with his advisors and Glinda alongside him, until the arrival of the Darkness in Oz. He is one of the very few who currently knows about the Darkness; as much as he dislikes keeping the danger a secret, he is determined to protect Oz however he can.
